The team at jj Locations would like to introduce to you to one of our most unique and substantial location houses, the historical Apethorpe Palace.
Closed to the majority of the public and any commercial ventures for many years, the former royal residence was institutionalised before coming in to the care of English Heritage. English Heritage’s involvement was the catalyst for the property’s restoration before the property passed in to private hands. The current owners are in the careful process of passionately restoring the palace, one of only two English palaces in private hands, to its former architectural splendour.
Founded in the late 15th century, and blossoming in the reign of its most dedicated resident, James I, Apethorpe Palace boasts the unique position of exhibiting almost every period of architecture since its foundations were laid. James I made the most extensive contribution to the property, the fabric of which is still exhibited at the property in a selection of panelled rooms and substantial courtyards. No other state rooms in the country can claim to be the most complete, surviving examples of Jacobean architecture. If there ever was a ready-made set piece for the Stuart era, Apethorpe Palace is the place.
Film and photography crews are invited to tread the same floorboards personally selected by James I himself. There is little sign of modernity inside its walls and out, giving the setting an authentic aura of a distant time; an attribute that would inevitably make the job of an art department working on a period piece just that little bit easier. Good availability and an abundance of parking spaces mean that the owner’s can consider large crews that may wish to hire the property for an extended time.
